Unveiling Contrasts in Project Leadership: Scrum Master vs. Traditional Project Manager

During its virtual Unleash event, Atlassian announced the general availability of its generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities across its Jira and Confluence suite of tools for managing IT and DevOps workflows. Additionally, Atlassian committed to adding these capabilities to its Bitbucket continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) platform, enabling DevOps teams to streamline pull request reviews and automate suggested changes around syntax and code conventions through a natural language interface. Developers will also be able to generate pull request descriptions automatically from commit messages.

Matt Schvimmer, head of products for the Agile and DevOps division at Atlassian, highlighted that the introduction of Atlassian Intelligence aims to reduce the level of toil and stress experienced by DevOps teams amidst the increasing pace of application development and deployment.

Key highlights of Atlassian Intelligence's capabilities include:

Instant creation of user stories within Jira Software tickets Tone adjustment for customer responses within Jira Service Management Summary creation, workflow request launch via prompts, and test plan starting point generation in Confluence.

Furthermore, natural language capabilities, currently available for Confluence, will soon be generally available for Jira as well. Additionally, a beta feature supporting the demystification of company-specific concepts, jargon, or acronyms is already available, with forthcoming support for Jira Software and Jira Service Management.

Matt emphasized the pervasive application of AI across both IT service management (ITSM) and DevOps workflows, foreseeing a reduction in the level of toil for these teams. He acknowledged that while the impact of AI on the required size of IT teams remains unclear, the war for IT and DevOps talent may diminish as managing workflows becomes more accessible, reducing reliance on specialized expertise. However, he stressed the importance of embracing AI from both the bottom up and the top down within organizations to ensure optimal adoption. He recommended that IT teams assess processes ripe for automation by AI and restructure teams accordingly, aiming to leverage machine capabilities to enable staff to deliver more valuable services to the business.

To maintain the security of Omnibus packages created within CI pipelines, we employ the GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) key for digital signatures, assuring users that the packages remain untampered. This key serves a distinct purpose from other repository metadata signing keys and GPG signing keys for GitLab Runner.

Originally set to expire on July 1, 2023, we're extending the expiration date of the Omnibus package signing key to July 1, 2024.

Why the Extension?

The annual extension of the Omnibus package signing key's expiration aligns with GitLab's stringent security policies. This practice also minimizes potential risks in case the key is compromised. Gitlab opts for key expiration extension over key rotation to ensure a smoother experience for users who validate package integrity checks before installation.

Your Role in the Update

If you're one of the users who validate package signatures on the Omnibus packages distributed by GitLab, you'll need to take some action. Updating your copy of the package signing key is crucial to continue enjoying secure software installations.

It's important to note that the Omnibus package signing key is distinct from the key used by OS package managers like apt or yum to sign repository metadata. If you don't specifically verify package signatures or configure your package manager to do so, no action is required on your end to continue installing Omnibus packages smoothly.

By extending the Omnibus package signing key's expiration, Gitlab is ensuring that your software experience remains secure and uninterrupted.

On February 2, 2021 Pacific Time (PT), the following changes will go into effect: On February 2, 2024 PT, the following change will go into effect:
  • End support for all server products: This means that support and bug fixes will no longer be available for your server products.
To facilitate a smooth transition, we will offer three years of support and maintenance for your server products and provide loyalty discounts for eligible customers to upgrade to our cloud or Data Center products at a lower price. For those ready to explore the cloud, we’ve built the Atlassian Migration Program (AMP) which provides you with step-by-step guides, free migration tools, a dedicated migration support team, and a free cloud migration trial for the length of your remaining server maintenance up to 12 months. Augmenting our Data Center products

Even with three years to prepare for these changes, we understand that not every customer will be ready to make the switch from our server products to our cloud products. And, some of you have business requirements that might prevent you from ever operating in the cloud. For these customers, we’ll continue to offer our robust self-managed enterprise edition, Atlassian Data Center. This will include new capabilities and integrations that make it easier to use our cloud and Data Center products together, like unifying the admin experience for areas such as user management. We are also strengthening Atlassian Data Center by making some of our most powerful apps available natively and offering Priority Support with Data Center subscriptions for most user tiers. To support this continued innovation, we will update the price of Data Center subscriptions on February 2, 2021 PT. Your journey to cloud is just that: a journey. Some of you may be able to move quickly, and for others, it will take longer. Either way, the time and energy you invest in transitioning to cloud will pay dividends in several ways.
